Created in 1947 to celebrate the expansion of Air France's network, this is one of the most beautiful world maps that I've ever seen. Created by Lucien Boucher, a French artist known as 'Mr Planisphere' by Air France, he is mostly famous for a number of beautiful world maps that he did for Air France.
Lovingly restored by The Unique Maps Co, I guarantee this is the finest version of this map that you'll find anywhere.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (31x46cm), 24x15inches (60x38cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 140 inches (350cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
Please note the unframed 24x15in (60x38cm) map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
This map is an unusual size - it's very wide - and would make a fantastic statement piece above a sofa, table, mantelpiece or staircase. It looks magnificent at every size and you'll always be able to read the writing on the map.
If you’re looking for more options, I have another interesting Air France map by Lucien Boucher in 1939.
The map is dotted with beautiful, scudding pink clouds and a few Douglas DC-4 airplanes (or perhaps the Lockheed Constellation?), which had just started flying from Paris to New York.
Across the map are various "scenes" depicting what one might see if they visit each continent. Some cities are also featured on the map, such as the Manhattan skyline in New York and the Kremlin in Moscow.
Sitting in the middle of Australia appears to be a giant Dodo bird. And up in northern Canada there are two lovely polar bears!
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who loves to travel, air travel in particular - or someone perhaps who loves this rather unique poster style from the 1930s and 40s.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.
Check my canvas maps collection to see which maps are currently available on canvas.
Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.
If you are not happy with your unique map for any reason, contact me for a no-quibble refund.
I am very confident you will like your old map. I have been doing this since 1984 and I'm a 5-star Etsy seller with 1000s of sales and reviews.
This is the cheapest place to buy my maps online.
I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
