The map shows the southern part of Los Angeles from a vantage point above the corner of 10th and Pearl Streets (today called Figueroa Street). So that you can get your bearings, the bottom left corner of the map shows West Lake Park and Pico, Downtown LA is in the centre, and the map looks southwards towards Redondo and the Pacific Ocean in the distance.
As you can see, in 1894, a lot of LA was still just fields. If you zoom in, you can see Inglewood and Hyde Park are marked on the map - there's just not much there yet.
Deliciously, over 160 landmarks are named across the bottom of the map and you can look the numbers up on the map to identify the landmarks easily. And if that wasn't enough, there are even detailed views of City Hall, the Hollenbeck, and 6 other notable buildings.
Because this map is an unusual size - it's extremely wide! - it would make a fantastic statement piece above a sofa, table, mantelpiece or staircase. Please note that the smaller (18, 24 and 36 inch) maps have white edges that can be easily snipped off (or they may help you with framing). The larger sizes, and all the framed maps, are all printed and pre-cut perfectly to size.
It looks magnificent at every size and you'll always be able to read the writing on the map. I can print very large versions of this map up to 140 inches (360cm) wide. Get in touch if you're looking for very large maps.
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from Los Angeles, or someone interested in the history of the west coast.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
