A fantastically interesting map showing the Roman Empire's division England and Wales, or Ancient Britain as the map calls it, and the ancient Celtic tribes that inhabited the British Isles before the Roman conquest. The map was originally published by the Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge (SDUK) in 1834.
The map is primarily divided into the Roman Empire's 4 administrative sections: Maxima Caesariensis (north England), Flavia Caesariensis (roughly the midlands), Britannia Prima (the south) and Britannia Secunda (Wales).
Notably, this map also shows the ancient (iron age) tribes of the British Isles, such as the Silures of Wales and their neighbours the Dobunni and Ordovices, and the Parisi tribe of now-Yorkshire. These tribes were mostly detailed by the Romans when they arrived here and tried to conquer them.
I also have another similar map that includes the ancient tribes of Scotland and Ireland.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm), and 24x30 inches (61x76cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 50 inches (125cm) tall. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20in (40.5x51cm) version of this map.
Please note that the 24x30 inch map has white edges that may help with framing, or you can snip them off easily if needed. All other maps, and all framed maps, are just like the listing images.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your ancient tribe or heritage! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain tribe or ethnographic background is shown on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, housewarming or Christmas gift for someone from Great Britain or who is interested in the ancient history and peoples of the British Isles.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
