Engraved by John Rapkin and published by J. Tallis & Co in 1851, this is one of the finest and most detailed historic maps of the Arabian Peninsula, or just "Arabia" as it was known back then.
As you can see, there weren't many borders in Arabia back in 1851 - it was all mostly one country. Though you can see the beginnings of some countries, such as Oman and Yemen. Jordan is kind of here, as 'Arabia Petraea'. Dubai is here as 'Deba' - a town, rather than a state.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (180). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
The locations on this map include: the Red Sea, Bahrain (Bahrein), Gulf of Oman, Persian Gulf, Jeddah (Jiddah), Mecca and Medina. Riyadh is on here, though as an earlier name (which is now a suburb): Diriyah. Parts of Persia (Iran) and Iraq can be seen, along with bits of Turkey, Egypt and Eritrea.
The United Arab Emirates doesn't exist yet, though you may recognise some of the towns and cities that would later be formed into the UAE.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Saudi Arabia or someone who is from the Middle East.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
