A delightfully characterful and exceedingly rare Abraham Ortelius map of southeastern Europe, specifically the Balkan countries of Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. It was originally published in 1573 as part of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas of the world.
Despite being 450 years old, many towns and cities have already popped into existence. Venice, of course, is on the right hand side of the map.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain town or village is on this map. Please note that the place names on this map are in Latin, and in many cases are ancient town names that are not similar to today's names (Belgrade, for example, is Taurunum). The Danube and Sava rivers are very clearly marked, though, which helps you find the towns and landmarks!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x30 inches (61x76cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 90 inches (230cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from the Balkans or who has the Adriatic Sea in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
