Published in 1588 by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg, this is one of the first (and rarest) printed maps of Rome. If Shakespeare visited Chester, this is what it would've looked like. This map was first published in Civitates Orbis Terrarum - the Cities of the World - which was a cartographical masterpiece featuring 546 maps.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 400cm (160 inches) tall. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.

450 years ago, Rome was one of the biggest and most populous cities in the world. Compare this map of Rome to some of my maps of London or other UK cities and you'll see what I mean!
All of the ancient Roman landmarks are visible on this map, including the Roman Forum, Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Hippodrome, River Tiber, Pantheon and Castel Sant'Angelo (named here as Hadrian's Mole).
The Vatican is here too, though it's more like a named landmass rather than the Vatican that you'd recognise today.
Notably St Peter's Basilica isn't on this map - instead there's the Circus of Nero (also known as the Circus of Caligula) which would soon be knocked down and replaced by the Basilica and other Vatican structures that you'd see today in Rome.
The map has 269 numbered points of interest, with a legend at the bottom of the map to help you find them.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Rome or who has Italy in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.
Check my canvas maps collection to see which maps are currently available on canvas.
Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.
If you are not happy with your unique map for any reason, contact me for a no-quibble refund.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
