An incredibly rare and unusual map of the USA and Canada, focusing on the Northern Pacific Railway from Minnesota to the Pacific North West. The map was originally issued around 1870 to drum up investors to fund the construction of the railroad.
There's a lot of interesting detail on this map, including a proposed telegraph line into Canada, and isothermal lines (weather lines) that were meant to show investors how temperate the land was - and thus how great it would be for growing crops.
The map of course also shows the other railroads in the USA and Canada, including the Pacific Railroad across the middle of the country.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 125 inches (317cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of Canada by Arrowsmith in 1840.
Many of the states and cities in the United States of America and Canada are already visible in this map.
The locations on this map include: Hudson Bay, Quebec, Montreal, Vancouver, Toronto and Ottawa. Many of the states in America such as New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and California can be seen and are all colour coded to show the state lines.
You can also see the historical territories of Canada.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Canada or perhaps someone who has a keen interest in the rail-road of North America.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.

Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.
