This old and wonderful map, in its original black and white monochrome shows the ancient county of the Isle of Wight (or Wight Island as it was known then) in 1611. It was created by John Speed and engraved by Jodocus Hondius, and originally published in Speed's "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine".
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (178cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
I also have this same map in its handcoloured form. Depending on your room’s aesthetic/decor, you might prefer this version.
Many of the towns, villages and cities on the Isle of Wight are already visible in this map.
The locations on this map include: Yarmouth, Freshwater, Newport, Northwood, Cowes, Ryde, Bembridge, Godshill, Sandown, Shanklin, Niton, Chale, Shorwell, Batley, Castleford and Bridlington.
There are two lovely, detailed engravings of Newport on the Isle of Wight and Southampton, the nearest city on the coast of England.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain Isle of Wight town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from the Isle of Wight or who has the south coast in their heart
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.
Check my canvas maps collection to see which maps are currently available on canvas.
Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
