This gorgeous pictorial map of Italy was originally published by Earnest Dudley Chase in 1935. You probably won't find a more attractive and interesting old map of Italy. Highly detailed illustrations adorn the map, showcasing the most important landmarks of Italy - which are, to be honest, mostly churches.
There's a lovely drawing of Ponte Vecchio in Florence, and the Bridge of Sighs in Venice. There's an amazing birds eye view of the Vatican with St Peters Basilica, too. Really, maps do not get any better than this.
Earnest Dudley Chase, who would eventually become one of the most prolific and popular pictorial map makers, originally started his careers as a graphic artist. He didn't start making maps until fairly late in his life, but as you can see, he had a real passion for creating humorous, interesting and incredibly detailed maps. He mostly focused on the US, though he also made a few world maps, and even a few maps made of postage stamps!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 100 inches (254cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of Italy by John Speed in 1627.
The locations on this map include: Naples, Rome, Pisa, Venice and Milan. The southern Island of Sicily and two Western islands of Sardinia and Corsica of France are also visible. Famous Italian landmarks are dotted around the map such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Santa Maria Maggiore, Palazzo della Ragione, Palazzo Pretorio, Fountain of Santa Lucia and Santa Maria presso San Satiro.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Italy or has Italy close to their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.

Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
