A wonderfully colourful, interesting and ancient birds-eye map of Paris, published by Matthaus Merian in 1648. This is one of the oldest detailed maps of Paris.
The viewpoint of this map is modern-day Parc des Buttes-Chaumont in the northeast of central Paris, looking southwest across the oldest parts of central Paris. In the foreground is the massive Hospital Saint Louis, which back then was surrounded by fields. Well, most of Paris was still fields back then!
Looking towards the middle of the map you'll see a bunch of famous Parisian landmarks. Handily, there are numbers on each of them, and a legend at the bottom of the map to help you.
Notre Dame is here of course, as is Saint-Chapelle on the Île de la Cité with a lovely blue Seine running by. Dominating the left side of the map is the Bastille - and as you can see, that used to be the edge of town! The long building to the right of middle, with the blue roof, is the Louvre.
Because this map is an unusual size - it's extremely wide! - it would make a fantastic statement piece above a sofa, table, mantelpiece or staircase. Please note that the smaller (18, 24 and 36 inch) maps have white edges that will help with framing, or they can be easily snipped off if needed. The larger sizes, and all the framed maps, are all printed and pre-cut perfectly to size.
It looks magnificent at every size and you'll always be able to read the writing on the map. I can print very large versions of this map up to 120 inches (310cm) wide. Get in touch if you're looking for very large maps.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your house or street! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain place is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, housewarming or Christmas gift for someone from Paris or who has the French capital in their heart.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
