samson-kina-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-by-j-l-goffart-1914
Samson Kina Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster by J.L. Goffart, 1914

J. L. Goffart’s Samson Kina, published in 1914, turns a beverage advertisement into a piece of exuberant visual theatre. A jovial, broad-featured figure occupies almost the entire foreground, clasping an enormous bottle as though embracing a cherished companion. The bottle’s warm brown glass and orange-toned label stand out sharply against an expansive blue sky, while the exaggerated difference in scale gives the composition its immediate comic force. Far from a discreet product display, this is advertising conceived as spectacle.

Goffart was a Belgian artist working at a moment when commercial illustration drew freely upon academic figure painting, popular entertainment and the growing graphic directness of poster design. Samson Kina belongs to an early twentieth-century advertising culture in which products were frequently personified or woven into compact narrative scenes. Its title invokes Samson, the biblical strongman, and the central figure’s substantial physique lends the name a readily understood visual association with strength and vitality. Yet the treatment is playful rather than solemn: the heroic has been recast as affectionate comedy, with the bottle assuming the proportions of a second protagonist.

A closer look

The composition is built around a strong, asymmetrical embrace. The figure leans across the bottle, wrapping both hands around its curved body; his face, set above the shoulder of the vessel, is animated by a broad smile and carefully described hair and features. This arrangement makes the pose unusually readable at a glance. Arms, head and bottle form one interlocking silhouette, ensuring that character and brand cannot be visually separated.

Colour supplies much of the poster’s energy. A field of saturated blue dominates the upper portion, relieved by softer cloud forms in paler tones. Against it, the earthy brown bottle, cream highlights and flashes of orange create a warm focal cluster. Small reflected accents along the glass give the oversized vessel a sense of volume without disturbing the broad, flat colour areas that make the design so graphically effective. Below, muted greenish water grounds the scene and provides a cooler transition between the bottle and the distant horizon.

The maritime setting is economical but purposeful. A ship appears as a small silhouette towards the left, its scale intensifying the monumental presence of the foreground pair. Sky, sea and vessel establish depth with remarkably few elements, leaving the central conceit uncluttered. The name “Samson Kina” appears prominently in decorative serif lettering near the lower centre, embedded within the scene rather than detached as a separate caption. Even at this smaller scale, the typography retains sufficient weight to compete with the figure and bottle.

Context and significance

By 1914, the illustrated poster had become a particularly effective meeting point between art and commerce. Its success depended upon instant recognition: a memorable silhouette, emphatic colour contrasts and lettering that could function as part of the overall design. Goffart’s poster demonstrates that economy while preserving the modelling and narrative detail associated with traditional illustration. The distant ship and open water suggest a larger story, but everything ultimately directs attention back to the delighted figure and his conspicuously labelled burden.

What makes Samson Kina especially engaging is the confidence of its visual joke. Strength, appetite and conviviality are compressed into a single oversized gesture, while the cool seascape prevents the crowded central grouping from becoming visually heavy. It remains a spirited example of how early twentieth-century advertising could create a complete character and setting around little more than a name, a bottle and an unforgettable embrace.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
