A superb and extremely rare birds-eye map of Ottawa, Canada, from 1859 by the architectural firm of Laver and Stent. Just 4 years earlier it had been renamed from "Bytown", and 2 years prior, Queen Victoria had selected Ottawa to be the capital of the Province of Canada.
This map looks at the original core of Ottawa from the west, with Chaudière Falls and Parliament Hill in the foreground and part of Hull (in Quebec) to the left. The map shows both the Downtown and Byward Market districts of Ottawa, and extends quite far out into the distance - but it's all just fields back in the 1850s.
You can clearly see the beautiful Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in the top left corner, but you may struggle to recognise many other roads or landmarks on this map. (It was made a few years before the city's recognisable parliament buildings were built.)
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 160 inches (406cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
The locations on this map include: Chaudière Falls, Parliament Hill (formerly Barrack Hill), Ottawa River, Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Canada or perhaps someone who has Ottawa in their hearts.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.

Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.
