This illustrated map by Earnest Dudley Chase shows a very detailed pictorial map of Alaska in 1958. You won't really find a more detailed or interesting map of Alaska. There's even an 'interesting facts about Alaska' box in the bottom left... and an illustration of a cabbage (which apparently grew very large in Alaska).
Ernest Dudley Chase, who would eventually become one of the most prolific and popular pictorial map makers, originally started his careers as a graphic artist. He didn't start making maps until fairly late in his life, but as you can see, he had a real passion for creating humorous, interesting and incredibly detailed maps. He mostly focused on the US, though he also made a few world maps, and even a few maps made of postage stamps!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 120 inches (305cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (61x45.5cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of Alaska by WD Berry in 1967.
The left and right sides of the map includes grid references to help you locate the towns, villages and landmarks of Alaska. The map is also filled with illustrations of animals (such as the polar bear and musk ox), buildings and famous landmarks. Cities such as Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Tanana are also visible on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Alaska or someone who has been to see the Northern lights!
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
Some of my old maps are now available on canvas. Smaller and larger sizes are available, but you must contact me to order.

Canvas old maps are an interesting alternative to conventionally framed maps. Depending on your personal taste and room decor, canvas maps can "pop" a bit more than a framed map.
I print on responsibly sourced canvas with very high quality, fade-resistant inks. Then the canvas is stretched over a hand-glued solid wood frame - and yes, the wood is responsibly and renewably sourced.
The finished piece is 1.5 inches (3.8cm) deep and comes ready to hang.
Please note that because of the texture of canvas, some of the finer details on some maps will be harder to read than a map printed on paper.
At 36x24 inches (90x60cm) everything should be legible. But if you want to check before you order, please contact me.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
