Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Villosa Pomifera, dated 1817, presents a rose in several stages of its natural cycle: an open pink flower, a tightly held bud, abundant foliage and a ripe red hip. Rather than isolating the blossom as a purely ornamental motif, Redouté gives equal attention to the plant’s leaves, prickled stem and fruit. The asymmetrical arrangement rises lightly through the page, balancing the soft bloom at the upper left with the rounded, richly coloured hip below and to the right.
Redouté was a French artist celebrated above all for botanical studies in which close observation and pictorial refinement remain inseparable. His roses are particularly admired because they satisfy two kinds of looking: the careful scrutiny associated with botanical classification and the aesthetic pleasure of flower painting. Created during a period of intense European interest in horticulture and the systematic study of plants, Rosa Villosa Pomifera records identifying structures while preserving the irregular grace of a living specimen.
A closer look
The open rose is the composition’s palest and most delicate passage. Its petals move from blush pink at their outer edges towards deeper tones around a small yellow centre, with restrained gradations suggesting their thinness and gentle curvature. A neighbouring bud provides a compact counterpoint: where the flower spreads outwards, the bud remains enclosed by pointed green sepals. Together they allow the eye to compare successive stages of growth without disrupting the natural rhythm of the branch.
Across the centre, serrated leaves overlap in several directions. Fine lines describe their branching veins, while shifts between bright and shadowed green distinguish one leaflet from another. The foliage is full but never confused; each form remains clearly legible against the lightly tinted ground. Along the stem, small prickles introduce a sharper detail among the softer contours of petals and leaves.
The rose hip at the lower right is especially striking. Its saturated scarlet-red surface, marked by minute hairs and subtle modelling, stands apart from both the cool greens and the flower’s muted pink. The dried floral structures retained at its end are rendered with the same concentration as the bloom above. At the lower edge, the botanical name Rosa Villosa Pomifera appears alongside the French “Rosier Velu, Pomifere”, placing the elegant branch firmly within the conventions of a named botanical plate.
Context and significance
Early nineteenth-century botanical illustration occupied a productive territory between science and art. Such studies needed to make a plant’s distinguishing characteristics intelligible, yet their arrangement on the page also demanded judgement of proportion, spacing and visual emphasis. Redouté was exceptionally accomplished at reconciling these requirements. Here, generous areas of quiet background prevent the specimen from becoming crowded, while the angled stems and varied leaves preserve a convincing sense of organic growth.
The inclusion of flower, foliage and fruit makes this more than a portrait of a single bloom. It is a compact account of the rose as a complete plant, attentive to texture, structure and seasonal development. That breadth of observation—and the poised relationship between pale petals, fresh greens and concentrated red—gives Rosa Villosa Pomifera its enduring distinction within the tradition of botanical art.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
