Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s La botanique de J. J. Rousseau, Plate 62, created in 1805, approaches the plant not as a single decorative specimen but as a sequence of botanical revelations. Fruits, pods, seeds, leaves and a small flower are arranged vertically across an open ground, each isolated so that its structure can be examined. At the top, a halved brown fruit exposes a pale interior and carefully ordered seeds; below it, curved green pods disclose their own circular contents. The result is at once systematic and unexpectedly graceful.
Redouté was among the defining botanical illustrators of his period, admired for uniting close scientific observation with an exceptionally refined sense of composition and colour. This plate belongs to La botanique de J. J. Rousseau, a work situated within the flourishing natural-history publishing culture of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At a time when botany attracted scholars, collectors and educated general readers, such illustrations made the internal organisation of plants legible while retaining the delicacy and visual pleasure of fine art.
A closer look
The composition unfolds almost like a column of evidence. Its upper section is anchored by the cut fruit, whose smooth brown skin encloses a cream-coloured centre. The exposed seeds are not treated as incidental texture: their placement and individual forms are rendered with enough precision to become the focus of the study. Nearby, a smaller green fruit remains attached to a short stem, offering a compact counterpoint to the opened specimen.
Across the middle of the plate, two green pod-like forms curve gently around their visible seeds. Their rounded contours introduce a quiet rhythm, interrupted on the left by a narrow sprout with elongated leaves. Redouté’s fine linear detail gives the foliage a clear internal structure; delicate veins, carefully shaded edges and subtle tonal changes distinguish pliant leaf from firmer pod. The greens range from soft, yellow-inflected notes to deeper tones, set against earthy brown and restrained cream.
The lower section gathers several contrasting forms without allowing the arrangement to become crowded. A pale pink flower provides the plate’s most delicate accent, its petals shifting almost imperceptibly from light to deeper colour. Close beside it sits a dark, rounded seed pod, while a textured brown pod occupies the left and a slender green leaf rises on the right. Fine stippling and gentle shadow describe their surfaces while preserving the flattened clarity essential to botanical study. In the lower margin, the inscription “de l’Imprimerie de Langlois.” quietly records the plate’s publishing context.
Context and significance
Botanical illustration performs a distinctive double task: it must separate, clarify and compare, yet it can also turn classification into an art of arrangement. Plate 62 demonstrates how confidently Redouté negotiated that balance. There is no landscape or habitat to distract from the specimens, and very little conventional depth. Instead, ample negative space allows each fragment to be read individually, while the measured progression from fruit to pod, leaf, flower and seed creates visual continuity across the page.
The plate also reflects a period in which close observation of plants formed part of a broader culture of scientific enquiry and cultivated learning. Redouté’s contribution was to make such scrutiny visually persuasive. Here, botanical anatomy is neither dry nor merely ornamental: opened fruits and exposed seeds reveal how plants are constructed, while restrained colour and controlled spacing give the lesson its elegance. It is precisely this union of information and artistry that continues to distinguish his work.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
