Continuer la lectureAlphonse Mucha’s 1897 Poster for the Rolling Paper Manufacturer “Job” turns a commercial advertisement into an opulent study of line, pattern and feminine poise. A woman seen in profile holds a cigarette lightly between her fingers, her pale face framed by an extraordinary cascade of dark, curling hair. Around her, warm golds and deep browns are held within a strongly decorative border, while the name ‘JOB’ appears in large, stylised letters above. Product, figure and ornament are fused into a single, immediately legible design.
Created in Paris at the height of the Belle Époque, the poster belongs to the period in which Mucha helped establish one of the most recognisable visual languages of Art Nouveau. His advertising designs brought together graceful figures, flattened colour, botanical ornament and emphatic lettering, dissolving the conventional boundary between fine art and commercial graphics. Here, an everyday consumer product is associated not through literal explanation but through atmosphere: elegance, modernity and cultivated urban leisure.
A closer look
The composition is deliberately shallow, allowing the woman and the surrounding ornament to command attention with equal force. Positioned prominently towards the right, she is balanced by the bold typography and denser decorative detail on the left. Her face is calm and self-possessed, with softly modelled features standing out against the darker mass of her hair. The cigarette is a small object within the overall design, yet its careful placement makes the commercial subject immediately apparent without disturbing the figure’s poised silhouette.
Mucha gives the hair an architectural role. Its highlighted curls flow over the shoulder and spread into the surrounding field, creating sinuous rhythms that echo the floral and geometric motifs at the poster’s edges. Rather than behaving as a naturalistic detail alone, each lock becomes part of the graphic structure: loops, waves and tendrils guide the eye through the composition. This interplay between human form and ornament is reinforced by the contrast between smooth areas of skin and the intricate textures behind them.
The palette is concentrated and warm. Tawny gold, tobacco brown and black create depth without conventional perspective, while lighter passages around the face produce a gentle luminosity. Dark edging encloses the scene like an ornamental frame, and small floral details near the lower portion add richness without competing with the central figure. The word ‘JOB’ is not simply added as a label; its broad, graphic forms participate in the design, counterbalancing the woman’s profile and making the brand visible from a distance.
Context and significance
Posters occupied a conspicuous place in late nineteenth-century Parisian visual culture, where developments in colour lithography allowed advertising to become larger, brighter and more pictorial. Mucha was especially adept at exploiting this public format. His elongated compositions and elaborately framed women became so closely associated with the period that the manner was often described as le style Mucha, although it formed part of the wider international flourishing of Art Nouveau.
The JOB poster is particularly revealing of Mucha’s ability to make typography, figure and decoration function as an indivisible whole. Nothing is treated as secondary: the model’s profile attracts attention, the luxuriant hair sustains movement, the border controls the composition and the lettering delivers the commercial message. The result retains the directness of advertising while offering the intricate visual rewards of a decorative panel—a characteristic union of mass communication and artistic invention at the end of the nineteenth century.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
