Continuer la lectureMarcellin Auzolle’s Champagne Massé Père et Fils, Reims, dated 1925, builds its appeal around a genial, brightly dressed host. Leaning forward in a vivid yellow coat, he presents a champagne bottle in one hand and rings a serving bell with the other, his broad smile turning the advertisement into an exuberant welcome. Against the deep, shadowed ground, the figure, bottles and emphatic lettering form a theatrical arrangement designed to be understood at a glance.
Auzolle worked during a period in which the French advertising poster had become a sophisticated instrument of public persuasion. Rather than relying on the bottle alone, this design sells a whole social atmosphere: service, abundance and conviviality, all attached to the name of a champagne house in Reims. The city’s close association with Champagne gives the prominently displayed place-name considerable weight, while the personable central character makes a commercial message feel like an invitation to join the celebration.
A closer look
The poster’s hierarchy begins at the top with the reassuring phrase “LA BONNE BOUTEILLE”, followed by the larger word “CHAMPAGNE”. These lines establish the product before the eye reaches the figure, whose yellow coat becomes the composition’s principal block of colour. Soft modelling across its folds prevents the garment from appearing entirely flat, while the darker background sharpens the silhouette and brings particular attention to the face, hands and raised bottle.
Auzolle gives the figure a pronounced forward movement. His tilted posture and extended arms break the stiffness of a conventional product display, while the serving bell introduces an almost audible note to the scene. A highlight on the dark glass of the bottle catches the eye; below and to the right, several more bottles repeat its upright form. Their Massé Père et Fils labels transform this corner into a compact display of stock, balancing the larger human presence without interrupting his gesture.
Behind him, the curved form of a wooden barrel is only partly visible. Its warm brown tones and suggestion of grain add a material counterpoint to the smoother areas of yellow, black and white. Along the lower edge, “MASSÉ PÈRE & FILS REIMS” acts as both caption and visual foundation. The firm horizontal line of the company name steadies the otherwise animated composition and ensures that the brand remains the poster’s final, unmistakable message.
Context and significance
Commercial posters of this period had to compete within visually crowded streets and public spaces. Here, broad colour, clear contrasts and a deliberately simple sequence of information answer that challenge: slogan, product, character and maker. The approach turns typography into part of the spectacle rather than treating it as an afterthought. Even the repeated bottles contribute to the graphic rhythm, linking the expressive figure to the company name below.
The poster is especially engaging for the way it combines polished promotion with a touch of popular theatre. Its host is not aloof or ceremonious; he is animated, approachable and caught in the middle of service. That immediacy, together with the intense yellow coat and dark tonal setting, gives Auzolle’s design a buoyant presence while preserving the clarity essential to a successful beverage advertisement.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
