Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s La botanique de J. J. Rousseau, Pl. 44, published in 1805, presents the European plum (Prunus domestica) as a poised vertical study of fruit, foliage and stem. Several ripe plums hang among fresh green leaves, their deep purple skins lending the composition its richest colour. The branch occupies the centre of an otherwise open field, allowing its slender structure and natural asymmetry to be read with unusual clarity.
The plate was created for La botanique de J. J. Rousseau, a publication that brought scientific observation into dialogue with the Enlightenment fascination with nature and classification. Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists of his age, admired for combining close scrutiny of plant form with remarkable delicacy. Here, aesthetic refinement never obscures the specimen: leaf attachment, branching habit, fruit and surface texture are all made readily intelligible, reflecting the dual role of botanical illustration as both an instrument of study and an art of sustained looking.
A closer look
The composition rises from a narrow brown stem in the lower portion of the plate. Its slight bends establish a gentle rhythm, leading upwards through alternating leaves towards the clustered fruit. Rather than arranging the specimen into rigid symmetry, Redouté preserves the irregularity of growth: one leaf projects laterally, another turns to reveal its curvature, while those above overlap and spread into the surrounding negative space. The generous pale ground isolates each contour and gives even the smallest junction between stem and leaf visual importance.
Across the foliage, fine veins extend from clearly articulated central ribs, with restrained tonal changes suggesting folded, convex and gently twisting surfaces. The greens shift subtly according to the fall of light; brighter passages make parts of the leaves appear almost translucent, while quiet shadows establish depth without hardening their forms. Their pointed edges and varied angles provide a crisp counterpoint to the plums’ rounded weight.
The fruit forms the plate’s dark chromatic centre. Purple deepens towards near-black in the shaded areas, then softens through muted gradations around the curves. Small highlights create a smooth, faintly glossy surface, making the plums appear both substantial and ripe. Beneath the botanical study, the inscriptions “Dessiné par P. J. Redouté” at lower left and “de l’Imprimerie de Langlois” at lower right quietly locate the plate within the collaborative world of early nineteenth-century natural-history publishing.
Context and significance
Redouté’s reputation rests on his ability to reconcile descriptive accuracy with visual grace. His plants are not treated as decorative motifs detached from observation; nor are they reduced to schematic diagrams. Instead, each specimen is organised so that its identifying structures remain legible while colour, spacing and contour give it an independent artistic presence. This plum branch is especially effective because its subject is familiar: an everyday cultivated fruit becomes worthy of the same concentrated attention as a rare flower.
Natural-history books of this period increasingly sought to make specialist knowledge accessible to a wider scholarly readership. In such publications, botanical plates did more than embellish written descriptions. They clarified structure, aided comparison and encouraged readers to recognise plants through careful visual study. Plate 44 retains that lucid educational character, yet its spare arrangement, luminous foliage and dark fruit also reveal why Redouté’s botanical work continues to be appreciated beyond its original scientific setting.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
