Continuer la lecturePierre-Joseph Redouté’s Rosa Centifolia Caryophyllea, dated 1817, presents a rose stem at the height of flowering. Several densely layered pink blooms gather around the upper stem, accompanied by compact buds and dark, sharply serrated foliage. Set against an unembellished off-white ground, the specimen appears both abundant and remarkably ordered: the flowers provide a soft, intricate crown, while the leaves anchor the composition with firmer contours and deeper colour.
Redouté was among the foremost botanical illustrators working in France in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Celebrated as the “Raphael of flowers”, he combined close botanical observation with an unusually graceful sense of arrangement. This study belongs to the period of his celebrated rose project, Les Roses, published between 1817 and 1824. Such works answered two related interests of the age: the scientific desire to record and classify plants, and a cultivated appreciation of flowers as subjects worthy of sustained artistic attention.
A closer look
The composition rises from a robust central stem, its branching structure guiding the eye between leaves, buds and fully opened flowers. Redouté avoids the rigid symmetry of a diagram. Instead, the rose develops through a series of gentle deviations: one bloom turns slightly aside, leaves extend towards the lower left, and the closed buds at the upper right introduce a quieter counterweight to the expansive blossoms. The generous negative space around the plant makes each change of direction easy to follow.
Within the flowers, pale blush pink deepens in the folded recesses of the petals and fades towards their softly highlighted edges. Tiny yellow notes at the centres interrupt this restrained palette. The foliage is treated differently: its richer greens, pronounced veins and finely toothed margins give the lower half of the study greater graphic definition. These contrasts allow Redouté to distinguish the rose’s varied structures without sacrificing the unity of the composition.
The buds are especially revealing. Their tighter forms preserve a stronger pink, creating a visual progression from enclosed growth to the paler, more diffuse fullness of the open roses. Even small details carry descriptive weight: the delicate serrations of the leaves, the gradual modelling of each petal and the branching points along the stem all contribute to the sense of a living plant carefully examined rather than a generic floral emblem. The botanical name beneath the specimen completes the plate’s balance of identification and ornament.
Context and significance
Redouté developed his career in Paris, where botanical illustration occupied a fertile meeting point between art, horticulture and natural history. His patrons included prominent figures at the French court and, later, Empress Joséphine, whose celebrated gardens at Malmaison reflected the period’s enthusiasm for collecting and cultivating unusual plants. Yet the enduring distinction of his flower studies lies less in courtly association than in their poised combination of exactitude and ease.
Rosa Centifolia Caryophyllea exemplifies that balance. Its clean presentation serves botanical clarity, while the rhythmic stem, modulated pinks and alternating leaf shapes give the rose an independent pictorial presence. The result is neither merely a scientific record nor simply a decorative bouquet, but a carefully structured encounter with the particular forms of the plant.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
