Continuer la lectureAugust Macke’s Strollers in a Rocky Landscape, painted in 1911, turns a leisurely country walk into a vivid orchestration of colour and shape. Two elegantly dressed figures move through the foreground: a woman carrying a brilliant red parasol and a dark-clad man with a cane. Around them, rolling green slopes, trees and rocky formations are simplified into broad, interlocking areas of pigment. The figures remain recognisable, yet the landscape is no longer merely a setting; its shifting greens, blues and earthy browns create an energy of their own.
Macke was a leading figure in German Expressionism and an important member of the Der Blaue Reiter circle, formed in Munich in 1911. The group’s artists shared an interest in moving beyond naturalistic description, giving colour, rhythm and simplified form a more independent role. Macke brought a notably light, lyrical character to these ideas. Rather than concentrating on anguish or psychological drama, he frequently painted scenes of recreation and modern leisure—walkers, gardens, parks and people observed in public places. Here, the familiar motif of a stroll becomes a testing ground for the new visual freedoms of early twentieth-century painting.
A closer look
The composition is asymmetrical, with the couple placed left of centre and a comparatively open sweep of hillside extending towards the right. Their upright silhouettes stand out against the softer contours of the terrain. The man’s black clothing creates the darkest concentrated passage, while the woman’s reds provide the strongest chromatic accent. Her parasol forms a compact disc of colour amid the greens, making an everyday accessory function almost like a visual punctuation mark.
Macke constructs depth through overlapping bands rather than meticulous topographical detail. The foreground slopes rise and fall in warm green and brown; beyond them, cooler hills and rocky masses recede beneath a pale sky. Dark outlines appear around several forms, sharpening the distinction between figure, vegetation and stone. At the upper left, tall trees frame the view in dense, earthy tones, while the more open right-hand side gives the walkers a sense of space into which they can continue.
A small dog on the lower right is easy to overlook. Loosely handled and caught in motion, it creates a secondary point of animation away from the couple. Other details reward attention: the gradations of red across the woman’s dress, the slender line of the man’s cane, and the subtle changes of colour that make the hillside appear to undulate. Visible brushwork prevents the simplified forms from becoming static; individual passages retain a lively, tactile movement.
Context and significance
Painted during a period of rapid experimentation across European art, Strollers in a Rocky Landscape balances French-influenced colouristic freedom with the expressive simplification associated with German modernism. Macke does not abandon observation, but reorganises it. Trees, rocks, people and distant hills are held together by colour relationships rather than by strict realism, allowing the scene to hover between a recognisable excursion and an almost abstract patchwork.
The work also belongs to a remarkably concentrated phase of Macke’s career. His life was cut short in 1914 during the First World War, yet in the preceding years he developed a distinctive vision in which ordinary public life could appear unusually lucid and animated. The painting’s enduring appeal lies in that balance: the calm sociability of a country walk set against a landscape made restless, fresh and modern through colour.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (60x90cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
