Continuer la lectureAugust Macke’s Zwei Frauen (Two Women), painted in 1912, brings two fashionably dressed figures into close, almost interlocking proximity. Their broad-brimmed hats and rounded silhouettes give the composition an immediate visual rhythm, while concentrated passages of blue, orange, yellow and deep brown turn an ordinary encounter into a richly orchestrated arrangement of colour. The figures remain recognisably human, yet their bodies, garments and surroundings are simplified into broad, softly articulated shapes.
Macke was a leading figure in German Expressionism and an active member of Der Blaue Reiter, the Munich-based circle that sought new possibilities for colour and form in the years before the First World War. His paintings often drew upon the everyday world—promenades, parks, shops and elegantly dressed people—rather than overtly dramatic subjects. In Zwei Frauen, that modernising impulse is applied to a quiet social scene: observed reality provides the framework, but colour and pictorial structure carry much of the painting’s energy.
A closer look
The two women stand side by side in the central foreground, filling most of the upright composition. Macke distinguishes them through colour rather than elaborate facial description. The woman on the left wears a vivid blue garment, its cool intensity set against the warmer earth tones around her. Her companion’s clothing is considerably darker, absorbing the muted light and creating a strong visual weight on the right. Their hats echo one another in shape, establishing a repeated curve across the upper part of the group.
Faces and hands are only lightly stated. Rather than concentrating on individual likeness, Macke builds the women from contours, colour fields and subtle changes of tone. The faintly indicated hands are especially easy to overlook: they help to preserve the closeness of the encounter without becoming a narrative focus. Soft shading gives some volume to the dresses, but the overall space remains deliberately shallow, holding the figures near the surface rather than setting them within a fully described environment.
Behind the women, the setting dissolves into muted greens, browns and ochres, with possible suggestions of foliage in the upper left. A small accent of red appears near the left figure’s shoulder, enlivening the surrounding blue and earthy colour. Towards the lower edge, darker tones blend into lighter passages above, giving the composition a modest sense of depth without disturbing its decorative unity. The result is both intimate and patterned: hats, shoulders and garments lock together like parts of a carefully balanced design.
Context and significance
Created at a moment of intense experimentation in European painting, Zwei Frauen reflects Macke’s ability to reconcile avant-garde simplification with the warmth of familiar experience. Der Blaue Reiter artists did not share a single visual formula, but they were united by a belief in the expressive autonomy of colour and by an openness to artistic traditions beyond academic naturalism. Macke’s contribution was notably accessible and humane, frequently grounded in contemporary leisure and public life.
That balance gives this painting its particular character. The women are neither conventional portraits nor anonymous abstractions: they occupy an intermediate realm in which dress, gesture and companionship remain legible, even as saturated colour reshapes the scene. What first appears to be a modest meeting between two figures gradually reveals itself as an exercise in repetition, contrast and chromatic harmony—an everyday subject made distinctly modern.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24in (90x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
