| 16x12in (40x30cm) | 20x16in (50x40cm) | 24x18in (60x45cm) |
36x24in (90x60cm) |

| 12x16in (30x40cm) | 16x20in (40x50cm) | 18x24in (45x60cm) |
24x36in (60x90cm) |
Cartes encadrées
Nos cadres standard ajoutent environ 2 cm (0,75 in) de chaque côté.

Continuer la lectureAlphonse Mucha’s Zdeňka Černý: The Greatest Bohemian Violoncellist presents its musician with the poised concentration of a formal portrait and the decorative richness of an Art Nouveau poster. Seated with her cello and turned towards a sheet of music, Černý occupies the right side of the tall composition. Her curved silhouette is echoed by the instrument, while a pale ornamental disc of interlacing flowers and leaves rises behind her. Warm beige and muted gold establish a restrained ground for earthy greens, reddish-browns and the emphatic red lettering below.
Born in 1860, Mucha became closely associated with the elegant graphic language of late nineteenth-century Art Nouveau. His posters helped demonstrate that publicity could be both immediately legible and intricately decorative, combining portraiture, lettering and ornament within a single coherent design. Here that approach lends a concert performer the ceremonial presence more usually associated with an allegorical figure. The description “The Greatest Bohemian Violoncellist” belongs to the persuasive language of promotion, but the quiet, absorbed pose keeps the emphasis on musicianship rather than theatrical display.
A closer look
The composition is deliberately asymmetrical. Černý sits in the foreground facing left, leaving a comparatively open area around the music before her. Her curled hair, inclined head and gently bent arm form a succession of soft arcs; these continue through the cello’s body and elongated neck. Fine lines along the instrument and the figure’s arm sharpen their contours without disturbing the poster’s muted tonal harmony. Subtle shadowing gives weight to the pose, yet the surrounding colours remain largely flat and controlled.
Close attention reveals how carefully Mucha balances human detail with ornament. Lace-like patterning around the musician’s neckline and sleeves softens the solidity of her dress, while overlapping petals and leaves merge into the circular decoration behind her. The motif functions almost like a halo, though its densely floral construction remains firmly decorative. Rather than opening into a realistic interior, the beige background compresses the scene into a shallow, layered space in which figure, pattern and typography carry equal visual importance.
At the foot of the design, “ZDEŇKA ČERNÝ” appears in large stylised red letters, with “THE GREATEST BOHEMIAN VIOLONCELLIST” set beneath in a smaller but still assertive type. Slight flourishes at the ends of the letterforms connect the text to the surrounding curves. This lower block anchors the delicate upper composition: the name is not treated as a caption added after the fact, but as an active graphic element whose colour and weight complete the design.
Context and significance
Posters and illustrated advertisements became increasingly prominent within modern European visual culture during the late nineteenth century. Seen in public rather than only in galleries or private collections, they demanded clarity at a distance while rewarding closer inspection. Mucha was particularly adept at satisfying both requirements. Strong silhouettes and conspicuous names communicate the subject quickly; floral linework, patterned clothing and carefully integrated type provide the slower pleasures of looking.
This portrait also reflects the cultural prestige attached to concert performance in the period. The cello is both identifying attribute and compositional partner, its sweeping contours reinforcing the graceful linear rhythm for which Mucha is known. Yet the musician is not reduced to decoration: her attention remains fixed upon the score, giving the poster an unusual inwardness. That meeting of public acclaim and private concentration is what makes the design especially compelling.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x20in (90x50cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
