The 3 Valleys in France are shown here as a vast alpine panorama, with the ski area unfolding across the page in one continuous sweep of snowfields, ridgelines and resort bases. Rather than a flat overhead plan, this map takes an oblique viewpoint that lets the landscape read almost like a mountain window: Courchevel on the left, Méribel through the centre, and Les Menuires and Val Thorens stretching out to the right beneath a chain of higher summits and glacier terrain. It has the exhilaration of a big ski domain made visible at a glance, while still retaining the character of each valley.

That breadth is one of the map’s real pleasures. The lower slopes gather around recognisable villages and resort centres including Courchevel-Moriond, Courchevel Village, Méribel Centre, Méribel Mottaret, Saint Martin de Belleville and Val Thorens, while the higher ground rises into named peaks and cols such as Saulire, Mont Vallon, Cime Caron and Col de Thorens. The arrangement of the terrain is especially satisfying: wooded valley sides and settled bases along the lower edge, then open bowls, connecting ridges and glaciated heights filling the centre and upper reaches. The separate inset for the Versant Orelle adds another layer of interest, visually linked back to the main panorama with a bold white arrow.

The artwork balances atmosphere and utility beautifully. The mountains are rendered in cool blues, whites and soft grey shadows, with muted blue-green forests giving weight to the lower slopes. Over this calm alpine backdrop, the pistes and lifts are drawn in crisp, bright markings that make the ski area easy to follow without overwhelming the landscape itself. Red summit chevrons pick out key high points such as Saulire, Mont Vallon and Cime Caron, creating strong visual anchors across the composition. The bilingual legend at lower right, together with the compact sans-serif lettering, gives the whole piece a clear cartographic rhythm.

Look more closely and the map becomes even more engaging. Individually labelled runs thread down broad faces and through narrower wooded descents, while lift lines, viewpoints, picnic areas and mountain facilities are distributed across the scene in fine detail. The marked Parc National de la Vanoise and the named glaciers beyond the pistes lend the image a wider mountain setting, reminding you that this is not simply a resort diagram but a portrait of a whole alpine region. For anyone who knows the area, there is real pleasure in tracing familiar sectors from one valley to the next; for someone planning a future trip, it offers the same sense of possibility.

As wall art, it has a natural appeal for skiers who return to the 3 Valleys year after year, for families with favourite bases in Méribel or Courchevel, or for anyone who wants to remember the scale of the landscape as much as the skiing itself. The panorama carries both the practical fascination of a piste map and the wider romance of high mountain terrain, making it a piece people tend to revisit rather than simply glance at.

The art of the ski map

What gives this map its character is the way it treats the 3 Valleys as a single mountain panorama. The snowy relief, distant ridges and glacier fields create depth and atmosphere, while the valleys and resort clusters remain clearly legible within the wider alpine setting.

The graphic overlay is equally effective. Bright piste colours, dark lift lines, summit markers and compact lettering sit cleanly against the pale terrain, so the eye can move easily from broad geography to small details such as route names, link points and activity symbols.

A sense of place at home

This map would sit especially well in a chalet sitting room, a study or a family living space where skiing memories already have a place. Its cool palette and wide horizontal composition give it presence, while the recognisable layout of the valleys makes it rewarding to live with over time.

A thoughtful gift for skiers

This is a particularly good choice for someone with a strong connection to the 3 Valleys — perhaps a regular visitor to Courchevel, Méribel, Les Menuires or Val Thorens, or a family remembering a favourite trip shared across more than one valley. It feels personal because the landscape is so clearly and specifically drawn.

Perfect for:

  • A birthday gift for a dedicated 3 Valleys skier
  • A keepsake of a memorable family ski holiday in France
  • A chalet owner with ties to Courchevel, Méribel or Val Thorens
  • An anniversary gift recalling time spent in the mountains
  • A housewarming present for an alpine-inspired home
  • Anyone planning a long-awaited trip to the 3 Valleys

For someone who knows these valleys, this map captures not just where the pistes run, but how the whole mountain world fits together.

Looking for a different resort? You can order a custom map of almost any ski area in the world, with the coverage, colours and layout tailored to your preferences.

This ski area map can also be personalised. We can discreetly mark your chalet, highlight a favourite piste, add a small illustration of you and your family skiing, or include a date and dedication to remember a special trip. Each addition is carefully composed to complement the original map, preserving its character and keeping the mountain detail clear.

Customisation, sizing and framing

For guidance on size, colour or framing, or to discuss an option that is not available online, please contact us. Our team will be happy to advise, and we usually respond within a few minutes.

A familiar resort can hold years of memories: the slope where someone first learned to ski, a much-loved mountain restaurant, or the chalet you return to every winter. Explore examples of our personalised maps for ideas on how to bring those memories into your design.

For a more nostalgic finish, you can choose our optional ageing treatment. Softer tones and a gently weathered appearance give the map the character of a vintage alpine print, particularly suited to a chalet, study or reading room. Browse examples of our ageing treatments to see the different effects.

The model in the listing images is holding the 20x36in (50x90cm) version of this map.

For a larger statement piece, printing and framing at sizes up to 3 metres (10ft) may be available, depending on the original map. For a bespoke size or framing option that is not shown online, please get in touch. We will help you choose a format that makes the most of the map's detail.

The map is available as a giclée print on acid-free archival matte paper, or professionally framed and ready to hang. Our standard frames are offered in six carefully selected finishes: black, dark brown, dark grey, antique gold, oak and white. A wider range of mouldings, mounts and finishes is available through our custom framing service.

Our frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic, chosen for its clarity and light weight. The finish keeps the focus on the map, from the sweep of the mountain range to the finer piste lines and place names.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
