A masterpiece large format map of India and Southeast Asia by Herman Moll, originally published in 1717 at the height of European Colonialism in the region. Moll was the finest English cartographer of his time, and this was the first large scale English map of the region.
This map covers a huge area, from the border of Persia on the west to New Guinea and the southern edge of Japan in the east. India, Ceylon (Sri Lanka), Siam (Thailand), Malaysia, Borneo, Philippines, Indonesia, and a large part of China are all visible in this map.
Close-up engravings of major cities and ports in Bantam, Goa, Surat, Madras, and Batavia are shown on the left edge of the map, and if you look closely there are many rich annotations describing the Colonial European influence on the region.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (31x46cm), 15x24 inches (38x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 170 inches (432cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
Please note, the unframed 15x24 inch map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them, they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
If you’re looking for more options, I have another interesting South East Asia map by Jan Huygen Van Linschoten in 1596.
The locations on this map include: India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, Tibet, Malaysia, Singapore, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Taiwan and Indonesia.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Asia or has the South East Asia in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
