This map shows the District Railway in red, and railways operated by other companies in blue. The names of the other railway operators are in red lettering above the lines.
The Metropolitan District Railway, usually known as the District Railway (but you've probably heard of the Metropolitan Line!) was the world's first underground railway. In 1863 an underground line was built between Paddington, Euston and King's Cross. Over the next 25 years, as you can see from the map, the line expanded rapidly.
This third edition map shows the completion of the 'inner circle' and long tendrils starting to extend outwards. You can also see planned extensions (broken lines) and lines extended by omnibus service (circles).
Today, the Piccadilly, Circle and District underground lines use the tunnels and tracks originally laid down for the District Railway.
This map looks great at all sizes from 18x12in (45x30cm) to 24x36 inches (60x90cm) and beyond. But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 50 inches (125cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options. Please note that the unframed 24x15 inch map has white strips along the edge that can easily be snipped off with scissors (or they might help with framing). All other maps are as per the listing images.
Zoom into the listing images and marvel at the amazing detail of this map - and perhaps be amazed at just how developed London already was in the 1880s!
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from London or who has railways and tube lines in their heart. Or, of course, it would look great on your own wall as a piece of interesting art. And it would be a lovely housewarming gift for someone from London, too...
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (90x60cm) version of this map.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
