Pierre-Joseph Redouté’s Choix des plus belles fleurs, plate 85, published in 1827, centres on a fruiting branch laden with plums. Pale green and yellow skins deepen into soft rose and muted red, while glossy highlights and gradual shadows give each fruit a rounded, almost palpable presence. The branch enters the composition at an angle, its cluster of fruit balanced by broad, sharply observed leaves and an expanse of warm cream ground.

This plate belongs to Redouté’s celebrated Choix des plus belles fleurs, a sumptuous botanical project shaped by two complementary traditions: close natural observation and the refined culture of flower painting. Redouté was among the foremost botanical illustrators of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, admired for making specimens scientifically intelligible without sacrificing their grace as pictorial subjects. Published for audiences interested in both botany and cultivated taste, such images transformed individual plants and fruits into poised, self-contained studies.

A closer look

The composition is deliberately spare. Rather than placing the fruit within a garden or landscape, Redouté isolates the branch so that its structure can be read clearly. Several plums overlap at the centre, their differing positions revealing the way they hang from a slender network of stems. One fruit turns towards the light; another recedes beneath its companions, its lower edge darkened by a soft shadow. These subtle tonal changes establish depth without disturbing the plate’s clarity.

Above and to the left, two large leaves provide a counterweight to the rounded fruit. Their serrated edges are crisply defined against the pale background, while their surfaces are mapped by branching veins and minute variations of green. The foliage is not treated as a uniform mass: yellow-green passages suggest thinner areas catching the light, whereas deeper greens gather along folds, edges and recessed veins. The contrast between the leaves’ angular contours and the plums’ smooth silhouettes gives the study much of its visual rhythm.

Colour is handled with particular restraint. The fruits shift gradually from fresh green and warm yellow to blushes of pink and subdued crimson, suggesting variation in ripeness and surface tone rather than a decorative pattern imposed upon them. Tiny points of light imply taut, reflective skins. At the bottom centre, the caption “Reine Claude franche.” anchors the otherwise floating specimen, supplying a botanical label while leaving the greater part of the page unusually open.

Context and significance

Redouté’s reputation rests on his ability to reconcile accuracy with elegance. In his botanical work, stems remain structurally convincing, leaves retain their individual veining and flowers or fruit are arranged so that their defining characteristics can be studied. Yet these are never merely diagrams. Cropping, spacing and the distribution of colour are carefully controlled, giving each specimen the composure of a formal portrait.

That balance is especially apparent here. The plum branch is an everyday horticultural subject, but Redouté’s close attention turns it into a study of weight, ripeness and organic connection: fruit suspended from fine stems, leaves spreading above them, colour changing almost imperceptibly across each skin. The result is both informative and quietly sensuous, characteristic of a botanical tradition in which the discipline of observation could also produce images of exceptional decorative refinement.
