A slender green stem rises through a generous field of warm cream, carrying folded buds and a single open flower patterned in muted pink, white and touches of yellow. Long, narrow leaves curve away from the stem, while the plant’s bulbous underground structure and fine roots remain fully visible below. Nothing interrupts this complete, elegantly measured account of the specimen.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists working in France at the turn of the nineteenth century. His career extended across a period of intense political change, yet his floral studies maintained a remarkably consistent union of close observation and decorative refinement. Such images belonged to a flourishing culture of botanical classification, collecting and publication, in which unfamiliar plants were made available to both scientific and cultivated audiences. Redouté’s particular distinction lay in preserving botanical information without allowing the specimen to become visually inert: each stem, leaf and bloom is arranged with an artist’s feeling for rhythm and proportion.
A closer look
The open flower forms the composition’s principal accent. Its broad visible segments spread laterally from the stem, their dusky rose-pink colour paling towards white tips and enlivened by small yellow markings near the centre. Fine tonal transitions give the flower a soft, folded structure rather than reducing it to a flat diagram. Above it, unopened buds introduce a quieter sequence of greens, with slight hints of the colour held within. Together, flower and buds allow different stages of growth to be studied within the same vertical arrangement.
The leaves are as important to the design as the bloom. One slender blade bends outward before returning towards the central axis; another rises in close parallel with the stem. Their curves create a restrained visual rhythm across the otherwise empty ground. Fine lines articulate the leaf structure, while subtle shading distinguishes overlapping forms without disturbing the clean precision of the plate.
At the base, the cultivated elegance of the flowering stem gives way to a more anatomical register. The rounded underground structure is modelled in subdued earthy tones, ending in a delicate fringe of hair-like roots. Small detached botanical details appear near the upper portion of the plant, extending the illustration beyond outward appearance towards examination and comparison. The inscribed name, Moraea sordescens, anchors the specimen within the classificatory language of botanical study.

Early nineteenth-century botanical illustration occupied a productive space between art and science. A plate needed to communicate recognisable structures—habit of growth, leaves, flowers, buds and roots—while also imposing order on forms that rarely present themselves so neatly in nature. Here, the abundant negative space is functional as well as graceful: it isolates each contour and makes the branching stem immediately legible.
Redouté’s treatment of Moraea sordescens exemplifies that balance. The plant is precise enough to be examined, yet its gently asymmetrical curves, restrained palette and careful intervals of empty space give it an ornamental presence. The result is not merely a record of a species, but an unusually lucid encounter with its structure—from fibrous root to opening flower.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
