Titled simply “Boston,” this US Geological Survey map presents the Massachusetts capital and its surrounding towns as they stood in the early twentieth century, drawn from 1903 data and published with a 1912 imprint. Its restrained title belies the richness of the landscape it records: Back Bay’s gridded elegance, Beacon Hill’s historic rise, the dense urban fabric of Boston, and the storied approaches toward Lexington. In the precise visual language of the USGS, the city is not merely a political or commercial center, but a terrain of waterways, slopes, reclaimed land, roads, railways, and settlements. The map captures a moment when Boston was already deeply modern, yet still legible as a landscape shaped by harbor, river, hill, and colonial memory.

The US Geological Survey, founded in 1879, brought a new scientific rigor to American cartography, and this map is a fine example of its disciplined topographic style. Contour lines articulate the subtle rises and depressions of Greater Boston, from the prominent heights of Beacon Hill to the more open elevations beyond the urban core. Muted colors distinguish built-up areas, water, roads, and relief without overwhelming the eye, creating a composition that is both analytical and elegant. The USGS approach was practical, but it also produced maps of remarkable beauty: every contour, shoreline, and symbol contributes to a portrait of place at once measured and evocative, transforming metropolitan Boston into an intelligible and carefully ordered geographic system.

Boston’s complex relationship with water is one of the map’s most compelling subjects. Boston Harbor spreads eastward with its islands, inlets, and maritime approaches, while the Charles River bends between Boston and Cambridge before widening near Back Bay and the basin lands. The Mystic River, Alewife Brook, the Shawsheen River, Fresh Pond, and the Mystic Lakes reveal a metropolitan region organized by waterways as much as by streets. In 1903, Boston’s waterfront and river margins were places of industry, transport, and transformation, while areas such as Back Bay still carried the legacy of nineteenth-century landmaking. The map invites close study of how engineering, commerce, and natural geography converged to shape one of America’s most historically layered cities.

Beyond central Boston, the map opens into a constellation of neighboring communities, each with its own character and historical resonance. Cambridge, Somerville, Chelsea, Everett, Brookline, Newton, Watertown, Arlington, Medford, Malden, Revere, Winthrop, Quincy, Milton, and Weymouth appear as part of a growing urban region, increasingly interconnected by roads and rail lines. Lexington, to the northwest, adds a powerful Revolutionary association, recalling the opening battles of 1775 and the route from colonial protest to independence. Charlestown, Roxbury, Dorchester, Allston, Brighton, and Jamaica Plain remind us that Boston’s modern identity was assembled from distinct towns and neighborhoods, many annexed or transformed during the nineteenth century. This is Boston not as an isolated city, but as a metropolitan organism in formation.

The topographic detail also highlights the region’s green and elevated spaces, many of which remain treasured landmarks today. Mount Auburn Cemetery appears as a landmark of landscape design and nineteenth-century memorial culture, while Bear Hill, Lynn Woods, Alewife Reservation, and the Blue Hills Reservation register the rugged relief and preserved open lands around the city. The Blue Hills, rising south of Boston, provide a dramatic counterpoint to the harbor flats and urban districts, their contours signaling a more imposing terrain. Such features make the map especially valuable as a record of change: some shorelines, neighborhoods, and transportation corridors have been radically altered, yet the underlying geography endures. It is a finely measured portrait of Boston at the threshold of the modern age.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
