Published in 1934 by the United States Geological Survey, the “Seward Quadrangle” presents a precise topographical portrait of Seward, Nebraska, and its surrounding countryside at a scale of 1:48,000. Marked as an “advance” map, it carries the character of a working governmental survey: authoritative, practical, and rich with local detail. The sheet captures Seward at a moment when the Great Plains landscape was being carefully measured, classified, and connected through roads, rail lines, townships, and section grids. Its original title is wonderfully direct, reflecting the USGS quadrangle system that transformed American mapping into a standardized national project. Here, Seward appears not as an isolated town, but as the focal point of an ordered agricultural region shaped by transportation, land division, and subtle topographic variation.

The United States Geological Survey was, by the early twentieth century, the preeminent American institution for scientific cartography. Founded in 1879, the USGS set out to map the nation’s terrain with consistency and accuracy, producing quadrangles that served engineers, planners, farmers, geologists, and public officials alike. This Seward sheet belongs to that great mapping enterprise, in which even the quieter landscapes of the interior received the same disciplined attention as mountains, coasts, and mineral districts. The cartographic language is clean and analytical: contour lines reveal elevation, roads and railroads define patterns of movement, and township and section lines impose the familiar geometry of settlement across the land. The result is both utilitarian and historically evocative, a measured view of Nebraska during a pivotal decade.

Seward itself, positioned west of Lincoln, stands at the heart of the map as a county seat and regional center rooted in nineteenth-century settlement. Named for William H. Seward, the city developed within the broader agricultural expansion of eastern Nebraska, where prairie lands were surveyed, parceled, cultivated, and linked to markets by rail. By 1934, the town’s relationship to its hinterland was firmly established: roads radiated through farms and townships, while rail corridors connected local production to larger economic networks. The map offers a quietly revealing glimpse of this built environment, showing not only a city, but the supporting web of rural roads, parcels, and unincorporated communities that sustained it. For collectors, that interplay between civic identity and agricultural landscape is one of its most compelling qualities.

Topographically, the Seward Quadrangle is a study in gentle but meaningful variation. Unlike the dramatic relief of western mountain maps, this Nebraska sheet rewards close reading: contour lines trace shallow rises, drainage patterns, low valleys, and the subtle undulations that shape farming, travel, and settlement. Rivers and watercourses, though not individually named in the supplied details, would have played an essential role in defining local movement and land use, as waterways so often did across the Plains. Lakes, roads, railroads, and township boundaries further articulate the landscape, creating a layered record of both natural form and human order. The measured contours remind the viewer that even the seemingly level prairie is a finely textured environment, one that surveyors translated into exacting visual form.

As a historical document, this 1934 map captures Seward and its environs during the Depression era, when infrastructure, land management, and rural economies were under intense pressure across the Great Plains. The same decade saw federal agencies expand their role in surveying, conservation, transportation, and public works, making maps like this essential tools for understanding and administering the landscape. Its depiction of roads, railroads, section lines, and rural settlement patterns offers a baseline against which later suburban growth, highway development, agricultural consolidation, and changes in land use can be measured. More than a technical survey, the Seward Quadrangle is a carefully composed record of place: a Nebraska community and its surrounding countryside rendered with the disciplined elegance of USGS cartography.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Many of our maps and art prints are chosen as thoughtful gifts for homes, offices, studies and meaningful places.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
