Spain & Portugal is the proud title carried atop A. Fullarton & Co.’s consummate vision of the Iberian world, a plate refined between about 1864 and 1872 from the meticulous work first engraved by G. H. Swanston in installments issued 1854–1862. Conceived for Fullarton’s famed decorative atlas program, the map balances elegance and authority at a moment when national identities and provincial structures were settling into their modern forms. It offers a richly articulated synthesis of political and physical geography, uniting the Iberian Peninsula and its maritime setting in the Atlantic and Mediterranean with a clarity that reflects the publisher’s house style—crisp line engraving, luminous color, and a compositional poise rare in mid‑Victorian cartography.

The plate’s artistry resides in its engraved precision. A carefully ruled graticule frames the peninsula, while fine hachuring models relief so that mountain chains lift visibly from the surface without overwhelming the script of cities and provinces. Bright hand coloring organizes Spain’s provinces and Portugal’s districts into a legible mosaic, each tint sharply bounded to preserve the integrity of the engraved line. The ornamental cartouche and decorative border signal refinement rather than excess, guiding the eye inward to the map’s dense, readable core: settlements, rivers, and coastal contours arrayed with typographic hierarchy that makes navigation across the sheet intuitive and rewarding.

Geography unfolds in layers. The Pyrenees crown the north, their serried shading cascading into the Cantabrian Mountains, while the Guadarrama, Sierra Morena, and snow‑suggestive Sierra Nevada stride southward. Great rivers arc through the terrain—the Ebro cutting east to the Mediterranean, the Douro and Tagus crossing Portugal to the Atlantic, the Guadalquivir winding toward the Gulf of Cádiz—each plotted with tributaries that reveal drainage basins at a glance. Political borders are cleanly drawn from Galicia to Andalusia, from Navarre and the Basque provinces to Catalonia and Valencia, and westward through the Alentejo and Algarve. An inset at right deftly gathers the Balearic Islands—Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza—into the narrative without sacrificing scale on the mainland.

Context enriches the cartography. The map captures Iberia in an era of reform and redefinition: Spain after the 1833 provincial division and amid mid‑century upheavals, Portugal in the steady cadence of its constitutional monarchy. Provincial demarcations and the dense constellation of towns—Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Seville, Granada; Lisboa, Porto, Coimbra, Braga, Faro—are presented with disciplined balance, allowing the viewer to pass seamlessly from national overview to local particular. Shores fronting the Bay of Biscay and the Strait of Gibraltar are crisply profiled, ports neatly named, and capes and promontories—Finisterre to St. Vincent—etched with the seafarer’s precision that underpinned Iberia’s global reach.

As one of the culminating statements of what is often called the last great decorative atlas published in England, Fullarton’s Iberian sheet marries the flourish of earlier mapmaking with the empirical rigor of the 19th century. Swanston’s craftsmanship anchors that synthesis, while the broader atlas context nods to a world‑spanning historical geography—companion sheets ranged from European frontiers to far‑flung regions such as Alaska—even as this plate remains devoted to the Peninsula and its islands. The result is a work that rewards both the connoisseur of engraved style and the student of Iberian history: authoritative, beautiful, and irresistibly legible.

This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
